Creating Indestructible Self-Healing Circuits

Ali Hajimiri, Thomas G. Myers Professor of Electrical Engineering, and colleagues have built electronic chips that repair themselves. The team has demonstrated this self-healing capability in tiny power amplifiers. The amplifiers are so small, in fact, that 76 of the chips—including everything they need to self-heal—could fit on a single penny. In perhaps the most dramatic of their experiments, the team destroyed various parts of their chips by zapping them multiple times with a high-power laser, and then observed as the chips automatically developed a work-around in less than a second. A New Tool for Secret Agents—And the Rest of Us

Ali Hajimiri, Thomas G. Myers Professor of Electrical Engineering, and Postdoctoral Scholar in Electrical Engineering, Kaushik Sengupta, have developed tiny inexpensive silicon microchips that generate terahertz (THz) waves that fall into a largely untapped region of the electromagnetic spectrum and that can penetrate a host of materials without the ionizing damage of X-rays. When incorporated into handheld devices, the new microchips could enable a broad range of applications in fields ranging from homeland security to wireless communications to health care, and even touchless gaming. "This extraordinary level of creativity, which has enabled imaging in the terahertz frequency range, is very much in line with Caltech's long tradition of innovation in the area of CMOS technology," says Chair Ares Rosakis. Edward Keehr Wins Charles Wilts Prize

Edward A. Keehr, advised by Ali Hajimiri, Thomas G. Myers Professor of Electrical Engineering, is the winner of this year's Charles Wilts Prize. The Charles Wilts Prize is awarded every year to a graduate student in Electrical Engineering for outstanding independent research.

Aydin Babakhani Wins Charles Wilts Prize

Ali Hajimiri Named Fellow of IEEE

Congratulations to Ali Hajimiri, Professor of Electrical Engineering, who has been named Fellow of IEEE for development of high-speed silicon integrated-circuit oscillators, power amplifiers, and phased arrays. Elevation to IEEE Fellow is one of the most prestigious honors given by the IEEE which is the world's largest professional association.

Ali Hajimiri Awarded $6 Million to Develop Self-Healing Circuits

Over the past few decades, the transistors in computer chips have become progressively smaller and faster, allowing upwards of a billion individual transistors to be packed into a single circuit, thus shrinking the size of electronic devices. But these circuits have an intractable design flaw: if just a single transistor fails, the entire circuit also fails. One novel way around the problem is a so-called self-healing circuit. Such circuits are "inspired by biological systems that constantly heal themselves in the presence of random and intentional failures," says Caltech professor Ali Hajimiri.
