B.S., Stanford University, 1989; M.S., 1990; Ph.D., 1994. Assistant Professor, Caltech, 1994-2000. Associate Professor, 2000-05; Professor, 2005-13; Van Osdol Professor, 2013-; Vice Provost, 2021-.
Research interests: information theory, communications, neuroscience
Overview
Professor Effros' research interests include information theory and neuroscience theory. Long-standing contributions in information theory focus on topics related to source coding (data compression), channel coding (reliable data transmission), network coding (efficient and reliable information transmission in distributed systems), and secure communications. Newer work in neuroscience theory aims to develop a unified mathematical framework for understanding how the behavior of individual neurons gives rise to phenomena such as memory.
