Guruswami (Ravi) Ravichandran, John E. Goode, Jr. Professor of Aerospace and Professor of Mechanical Engineering, as well as Director of GALCIT and former members of his group have received a Journal Strain Best Paper Prize. The paper is titled Three-dimensional Displacement and Shape Measurement with a Diffraction-assisted Grid Method. The award winning team consisted of a high school student intern, a visiting undergraduate student researcher, a graduate student, a postdoctoral scholar, and a faculty member.
The prize is given out by the Journal’s Editorial Board and the British Society for Strain Measurement (BSSM) to the Best Paper published in 2013 in the Journal Strain. Also the Fylde Electronic Laboratories Ltd., U.K. sponsors the prize. The prize-winning paper is authored by Jacob Notbohm, Alexandros Rosakis, Satoshi Kumagai, Shuman Xia and Guruswami Ravichandran. Jacob Notbohm was a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering at Caltech and is currently a postdoctoral scholar in the Harvard School of Public Health. Alexandros Rosakis was an intern in Professor Ravichandran’s laboratory while he was a student in the Polytechnic High School in Pasadena. He is currently a sophomore studying Bioengineering in Brown University. Satoshi Kumagai was a visiting research student whose internship at Caltech was sponsored by the TiROP program of the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He is currently an engineer with the Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems in Japan. Shuman Xia was a postdoctoral scholar at Caltech and is currently an Assistant Professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech.
Alexandros Rosakis presented a keynote lecture based on the paper at the 16th International Conference on Experimental Mechanics (ICEM 16) in Cambridge, U.K. He then accepted the award on behalf of all the authors.
