Desbrun Elected to ACM SIGGRAPH Academy

Mathieu Desbrun, Carl F Braun Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, was selected as a 2021 awardee for the ACM SIGGRAPH Academy. Professor Desbrun was selected for contributions to geometric processing and establishing the discrete differential geometry framework. The ACM SIGGRAPH Academy is an honorary group of individuals who have made substantial contributions to the field of computer graphics. These are principal leaders of the field, whose efforts have shaped the disciplines and/or industry, and led the research and/or innovation in computer graphics and interactive techniques. Professor Desbrun Named ACM Fellow

Alumna Wins Woman of the Year Award

CMS alumna, Ashley Williams, was named 2018 Woman of the Year by the Aerospace Corporation. Dr. Williams received her Caltech PhD in 2011 and was advised by Professors Jerry Marsden, Richard Murray, and Mathieu Desbrun. Best Paper Award at Symposium on Geometry Processing

Kushal Agarwal Receives 2016 Henry Ford II Scholar Award

Computing and Mathematical Sciences student Kushal Agarwal, mentored by Professor Mathieu Desbrun, is a recipient of the 2016 Henry Ford II Scholar Award. In addition to his class work, Kushal enjoys working on software, computer vision, and controls for the Caltech Robotics Team. The Henry Ford II Scholar Award is funded under an endowment provided by the Ford Motor Company Fund. The award is made annually to engineering students with the best academic record at the end of the third year of undergraduate study.

Fernando de Goes Receives a 2013 Google PhD Fellowship

Fernando de Goes, a graduate student in Computing and Mathematical Sciences working with Mathieu Desbrun, has received a Google U.S./Canada PhD Student Fellowship for his research on the development of numerical tools for computer graphics and computational physics based on discrete differential geometry. Melissa Yeung Wins DOE Fellowship for Computational Science

Graduate student Melissa Yeung, working with Professor Mathieu Desbrun, is one of 21 students nationally to receive a Department of Energy (DOE) 2012 Computational Science Graduate Fellowship. Yeung studies an area of mathematics known as discrete differential geometry, which has diverse applications in such fields as engineering, computer animation, product design, and medicine. Best Paper Finalist in Robotics

Marin Kobilarov, a W. M. Keck Institute for Space Studies Postdoctoral Fellow, was a finalist for the best paper award in the 2011 Robotics: Science and Systems Conference - his paper is entitled Cross-Entropy Randomized Motion Planning .  The conference committee solicited original papers in all areas of robotics and followed a highly selective review process designed to select the best work of its kind in every category. Dr. Kobilarov is working on discrete geometric motion control of autonomous vehicles with Professors Mathieu Desbrun and Sergio Pellegrino.  [Read the paper]
